Ufouria
-
1991 SunSoft - SunSoft - NES
Another of those games that wasn't released in the States. Another of those ROMs that mysteriously ended up on my hard drive.
Ufouria is an extremely cool game. It was released in Japan as Hebereke, and then released as Ufouria either in Europe and Australia or just Australia. Why? No clue . . . Probably because it's cool . . . Take that, Contra!
It's a game somewhat similar to Super Metroid and CV:SotN, only much shorter and stranger. It's got that NES-style weirdness about it . . . But, eh, anyway . . .
Story
Bop Louie mysteriously winds up in the middle of no where, and goes searching for his friends. He doesn't know where he is, and there are a lot of various creatures (most of which cause Bop Louie PAIN!) like these little white things and then some green things and these birds that drop weights on you (In Hebereke, the birds drop feces . . . ). So anyway, Bop Louie wanders around this world and eventually runs into Freeon-Leon, Shades, and Gil, his friends. But none of them remember each other, so they try to fight Bop Louie . . . After he "whoops 'em good," he tells them who they are and what they do . . . And then they join Bop Louie on his quest . . .
"But wasn't his quest just to find his friends?" YES! "How can they join him on his quest if his quest is over?" YES!
Well, now they have a new mission, to find three keys that open up a big door. Why? Who knows. Well, apparently, Bop Louie and his friends do!
Ending: After you beat the final boss it shows a little cutscene where you find out that "Ufouria" is the name of the fours' home planet . . . Bop Louie wants to go home, but the others want to stay (Stay in the land with the monsters and pooping birds). Bop Louie LEAVES THEM! WITH A ROCKETSHIP! How come he couldn't fly around in the rocketship during the game?! Well right after they say bye as he's leaving, he comes back! He decided to come back because they had so much fun together! HOORAY! HOORAY! HOORAY!
Ok, so the story is a bit lacking and by "a bit lacking" I mean "nonexistent." Who plays NES games for their stories? And look at Sunsoft's other storylines . . . "BOY JUMP DOWN HOLE TO RESCUE ESCAPED FROG. FIND UNDERGROUND WORLD. THINGS WANT TO KILL HIM." Speaking of Blaster Master, how come Jason can fall down the huge hole in his backyard that has to be deep enough to allow for A WORLD to fit there, yet when I play and he falls down an NES distance of about 6 pixels, he dies? WUTS UP WIT DAT! Hey, BM was made by Sunsoft . . . you know what else was made by that same company? Ufouria! Trippy, eh?
Gameplay
Like I said it's similar in style to SotN and Super Metroid . . . in that you've got a map . . . and uhh . . . you can wander around freely until you find an item that lets you wander around more freely until you find an item that . . . you know. The world's not as big as Dracula's Castle or Samus's Dracula-Inspired Castle, but hey . . . It's the NES.
And you can change between characters in this game, too! Well, once you fight them and make them remember who they are, that is. Bop Louie is fast-walking and has a decent jump, but he can't even really move in water. Freeon-Leon is slow and can't jump but can float on the water's surface. Shades is ugly and can jump longer distances because he can kind of glide (but he's ugly and stupid and I hate him. I'd rather use a pooping bird, at least those can poop. Poop.) Gil is mentally handicapped but at least he can swim underwater and lay explosive eggs out the mouth.
The controls are normal. Jump, Pick up/throw/special weapon, Menu, Pause. teh controler set up is vary inovative tho because of they made it so teh arrow buttons move ur character on the screen!!1 what weill they comes up with next!!
There are a few items, all of which just give a character a new ability or let you use a map or view the password . . . There aren't any weapons or anything like that, technically. You defeat enemies by pouncing on them or by throwing things (After you jump on enemies they either drop a little HP-pearl thing or some circle with eyes that you can pick up and throw) at them. You could use the special abilities to defeat them, BUT WUT A Watse oF TIME! The bosses are easy, most of them only need the strategy of "JUMP ON THERE HEAD! PICK UP TEH THING THAT FALL! THROW THING AT THEM BOSS!" . . . I still love the bosses though, because most of them drool when you hit them.
An annoying thing was the HP . . . You start the game with 10 HP. Always. Even when you load a game (Well, use a password) that you may have left with 49+ HP, you start with 10. The maximum HP is 49 at first . . . then you get little expansion packs, basically, allowing another 50 . . . You can get four of them. Sometimes enemies drop the items that refill your health, but only by 2 HP. 2. There are potions that replenish 50, and a hard-to-get item that fills all containers all the way up (A waste if used anytime before fighting the final boss). You also always start the game at this one point . . . Oh well, at least the world isn't too big.
I guess that's about it.
Graphics
I like Ufouria's graphics. They are cartoony and colorful (which is usually annoying) but unique and cool and [other positive adjectives]. Most of the characters and enemies and bosses are neat looking . . . And most of them drool when hit . . . There's some creature that is used as a ladder, and the actually rope/ladder is a string of drool coming from its mouth. I love this game.
Sound and Music
There's only around maybe 4 songs in the whole game. They aren't especially noticable, which is good because it means they aren't annoying. Standard sounds and music.
Originality
YES!
Overall
Definitely worth a download. Pretty short, pretty easy (I only had trouble with two bosses, and usually I can't even get past a game's first boss. Stupid bosses.), unique, fun, laughable dialogue, and tons of drool (and even some snot from one of the bosses!). Completely underrated. You might want to download the Japanese version, Hebereke, if you prefer feces over weights, an uglier Bop Louie (Hebereke), and a CUTIE-er Freeon ([Japanese name], and s/he's now a little boy/girl in a fox costume instead of a dinosaur-type thing.).
PLAY OR PERISH!

It's time to end this somewhat hiatus and start writing video game reviews for no one again. Funny that after all of these months of college and unemployment I start wasting time with video games and shitty reviews once I finally get a job.
Also, maybe I'll start reviewing games that have been released within the past six months for once thanks to my new disposable (heavy emphasis on this word) income. Maybe.

I got an urge to collect crap for my chao in Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. I had quite a lot of fun until I realised that I already had a chao with 99 in all stats. That took a bit of the fun away but I have another 16 chao I can level up. But now I'm in a mood to play Zelda instead.May 31, 2010 - 15:53 GMT - Benny
I'm quite glad I went through with this The Green Shell idea. Combined with Hair, I've managed to build up a little backlog of updates that could last me at least a week. Although I have a feeling I'll put out a few of them at a time, which means I'll run out sooner. But yeah, while it's not necessarily easy to come up with shitty ideas for it, I have been looking around at a lot of random video game stuff over the last 12 hours and it's quite fun. I also need to play some more Star Ocean; I've got reptile aliens to kill and annoying girls to ignore! My hatred for Welch has gone down a lot since I got Lymle into my party. That annoying fuck pisses me off, 'kay.
