1994 SNK - SNK - Arcade
- Art of Fighting 2 offered the fighting game fans a little more this time around in terms of visuals, audio, control and above all else, some more characters to get our hands on! In this outing, you've got Ryo, Robert and Yuri coming back, and this time around the cast of Art of Fighting and a couple of new challengers that include the ninja Eiji and a fat man by the name of Temjin. In this outing, you're taking on the organization again, the one that you fought before, but as an added little bonus, you can fight the infamous Geese from Fatal Fury if you perform flawlessly through most of the game! You'll find that the environments have been detailed a little more, and every character has had a pretty good visual face lift from the first game. Something that appears to me, is that the characters seem to take damage and they show it once they've been nailed too many times by powerful attacks, and this adds some realism to a fighting game that goes out of its way to stomp on Street Fighter!

-Game Play 8/10-
Featuring several previously unplayable characters from the first Art of Fighting, you'll find that the diversity of the game has been stepped up a notch, giving you several different characters that you can learn to use and use effectively through the different situations that you'll come across! What will grind your teeth, is the fact that the computer controlled opponents will kick the crap out of you at every turn, and if you're not ready with your fighter of choice, you'll be picking up your teeth and self-respect off the arcade room floor! When it comes to a combination system, you'll find that AoF gives you plenty of opportunity to pull off two in one combinations as well as linking several different regular attacks together, just practice the timing and everything will be fine!
-
-Control 8/10-
Same control as before, you have a punch, a kick and that's it you're on your own! Learning the moves can take a little time, and with the amount of characters and trying to use them effectively is probably the hardest part of the learning curve! Each character handles differently, so you'll need to experiment with each to find out which one works for you.
-
-Visuals 8/10-
Seriously toned up since the first outing, AoF has brought to life several different features that were not so well known from the first one! The first of these being what I call 'impact-damage'. When you take plenty of damage, or too many powerful attacks, you'll find that your character looks like he or she just got nailed with a baseball bat to the face! Not only that, but the new backgrounds have been re-detailed with enough intricate design to keep any nit-picker happy! One last cool feature about the visuals, is that if a female character gets nailed with a fireball, their shirt blows off revealing some pretty racy under garments. Call me a neanderthal, but I find this to be a pretty cool addition!
-
-Audio 8/10-
A heavy improvement over the original, AoF features some pretty rocking tunes to keep each of the battles upbeat and paced with the action on screen! It's really rather uplifting to find this in a fighting game relatively old like this one. The sound effects also match each and every move, and there really aren't any complaints that can be found while playing through. You'll find the grunts, groans and war cries to be a nice addition to the rest of the soundtrack!
-
-Quarter Crunching 8/10-
You'll find that the difficulty of the game will have you dropping quarters in left and right when you go up against some of the more powerful characters! Blocking is key here, in which it will keep you from getting gipped out of more money just because you've had your ass handed to you!
-
-Overall 8/10-
A definite step up in the AoF series, you've got more characters, flashy moves, and plenty of detail in every aspect! Small problems are always abound, and run along the lines of slow down and some visual cut out as well as audio clips that are missing from the in game battle! Fans of the series are sure to find this title a treat, and only a step up to the next sequel could possibly make the series better than it is at this point.
