1986 Jaleco - Arcade
- Overhead action shooters that involve ships, planes and tanks seem to come a dime a dozen, and Argus is no exception to that rule. Putting you in control of a small ship, you're charged with the duty of saving the planet from hostile forces looking to take over and decimate everyone! It's not the most original concept, nor is it the most graphically superior of audio effective game out there to date. You probably won't find one of these machines outside of special arcades that dedicate their space to classic and ancient games, but if you do happen to find an Argus machine, it's worth taking a couple of bucks to go and play.
-
-Game Play 6/10-
It's an overhead shooter that pits you against an endless wave of enemy fighters and weird looking globes that all take cheap pot shots at you. You don't have much in terms of weapons save for your standard blaster, and you'll pick up the different bonuses depending on what and where you shoot during your flight on the different stages! Aside from that, the game play is simple and to the point: Kill or be killed.
-
-Control 6/10-
The control is mindlessly simple as is the game play. You have a simple joystick and a firing button in which you control your ship back and forth across the screen and try to take out as many of them before they blast you out of the sky. It's easy enough to use, but can be frustrating when you get cornered, or you're sure you moved and get blown up anyway!
-
-Audio 6/10-
Action shooting music at it's most mediocre! The tunes are tinny, and are easily overthrown by other sounds in the arcade. Each stage music doesn't really change, but rather it loops together in an endless flow that gracefully accepts the sound effects. Sound effect include your basic gunshots, explosions and chimes when you pick up a bonus located throughout the stages!
-
-Visuals 6/10-
Overhead shooting, but with little detail or variety! The stages are pretty straight forward, but the detail in each stage is rather drab and uninspired. Enemy detail is hard to see and everything pretty much looks the same after a couple of stages. What does come clear though, is that the enemy shots constantly fill the screen and you really can't see much of the landscape or the lack of detail anyway!
-
-Quarter Crunching 7/10-
With the computer gaining difficulty and the amount of incoming fire that you'll find flying at you, keep the quarters out and ready to earn another credit! If you've played other titles like 1941 and Raiden Project, you'll find that this game offers the same amount of quarter crunching that those two titles do.
-
-Overall 6/10-
Argus is a clone shooter that takes pages from Raiden Project and 1941 but doesn't do quite the job that was hoped. With drab detail, tinny and looping sound as well as an insane difficulty in the third stage on, Argus is best left to experts, or to those who have plenty of patience. If you find this machine, be wary...it's a money munching clone that has little to offer outside of rarity, but plenty to complain about!
