- Balloon Fight
-
1984 Nintendo - Nintendo - NES
Storyline
There is no storyline what so ever in this game. For some
reason two guys in red and blue
clothings got balloons attached to their backs and their
mission is to pop the balloons of
visious birds (also armed with balloons). I guess the game
has a meaning or a message
hidden in it. It could be to show the player what would
become of the world if bird-people
got their hands on the earth's balloon suplies.
- Gameplay
The controls in this game are very easy. By holding the
B-button your character flies.
If you prefer you can tap the A-button repeatadly instead of
holding the B-button, it has the same effect.
With the direction pad you steer your character through the
air. Your mission is to pop
the enemy's balloons. I don't know what the enemy is. It
looks like a cross between human
beings and birds, and the Instruction Booklet describes
them in this following way: "Enemy".
Yes . . . The booklet is to very much help. To survive this game
you have to stay away from the pointy
things in the enemy's faces (possibly beaks), lightning, and
the evil fish. Lightnings only strike
when you've been at the same level too long, and the fish is
only able to catch you if you're flying to close
to the water.
A funny thing is the bonus level you get to visit after every
third level. You get a new
set of balloons every time you come there, and you can
collect points buy popping balloons.
- Graphics
Well . . . Typical NES graphics from the early years of the '80s.
They are clear and pretty nice,
no annoying background objects, that the "newer" NES
games always had, so you will always
have a good view of you balloonist. The most impressive
thing is the lightning. They flash in both blue,
yellow, and white.
-
Sound
The music in this game is pretty catchy. Perfect balloon
music. I really like the music
in the Trip (I will explain more about the trip later). The
sound effects are also good.
It actually sounds like a real balloon at a distance when you
pop one. And the sound that
plays when you get caught by the fish is also good for the
feeling of the game.
- Replayability
This game is fun both when you play alone or with a friend.
And if you're really good you can go on for eternities
(at least untill you or your NES dies), 'cause when you've
finished the last stage you get
to continue at the forth stage and then it just loops that
way. Since this game is really
simple and doesn't take too long time to play it's a good
game if you want to play it often,
but in short sessions. If you've grown tired of the ordinary
one player game you can always go on
the Trip. In the Trip the screen autoscrolls and all you have
to do is pop balloons and watch out
for lightnings and the fish.
If you're two players this game can last for a very long time.
It's fun to have fights with
eachother in the bonus level where you can't actually die.
- Originality
This game is pretty original, just as so many NES games
were back in '84. No really groundbreaking
ideas, but still a fun arcade-game.
- Overall
Fun for both one and two players. Most fun if you're two of
course. The graphics are clear, but nothing special,
and the music is good. I recommend this game if you like to
play in short periods very often.
