- Big Buck Hunter is a game that borrows heavily from another Deer Hunting game out there called Deer Hunting USA. While the bonus rounds that you go up against are something completely new, the overall scheme of the game really isn’t all that different. Some of the scoring and otherwise that you come across is extremely similar to Deer Hunting USA with one minor difference. The biggest scores are the ones that you get with shooting down the Big Buck!

The Game Play
You have four different regions that you can choose from, and in each of these regions, you have to deal with different types of terrain in order to capture your quarry. There are rules to this game though that you have to be aware of from the start and if you’re not careful, it could cost you a life and send your overall score plummeting into the ground. If you shoot a doe, then you lose a life for making that one mistake. What you’ll be aiming for is the biggest deer with the largest antlers on its head, so be aware of that and keep it in mind while playing!
Something that does set this game apart from Deer Hunting USA is the fact that you have bonus rounds that you can compete in. The more you fire off on the targets and the better your accuracy means that you’ll get a better score as you move through the game. Although this might not seem like much, it still is a pretty good diversion from the normal game and adds a little variety. Also, the one thing that this game has in its favor is that you can go after the Big Buck in certain areas for a trophy head and top score!
The control is where the game truly suffers. Once you've played first person shooters, it's hard to get used to the fact that you have to use a loading slide on the underside of the gun to fire off a round at a fleeing deer. On the otherhand, for the most part, you'd have to reload anyway, just to gain a true feel for being in the woods with a rifle. It can get a little annoying, but you'll also get used to it after a couple of tries.
Another complaint here, is the fact that once the gun has been used a few times, the accuracy goes down. It doesn't match up with that of what's on the the screen. You may be shooting to kill, and completely miss, or hit someplace else where you weren't aiming. It's rather frustrating when you start missing, and have to pump more tokens or quarters in to continue!

The Visuals
Crisp and clean, each area has some impressive detail added into it as well as different lighting effects to keep you on your toes. The foreground also plays a major role in this game, simply because when you least expect it, you’ll have a deer jump out and run away before you can get a shot off! With the different locations that you hunt in, you’ll have trees, hills, snow and otherwise to keep you company. Although this doesn’t seem like much, the deer actually look like real deer this time around and that is always a bonus.

The Audio
A strange blend of country/hillbilly music, and the sound of the wind. Not such a bad thing, and the actual effects of the weapons going off is a nice touch. However, this game suffers from something that was thought to have been erased from the face of gaming. The general stereotyping of your guide, who sounds like a hunter on a three day binge, complete with the southern drawl and infinate schooling level of a 2nd grader.
The major complaints here, would be with the lack of actual nature sounds that you would here. There are no birds, no hooves hitting the dirt while the deer escapes, and nothing that would put you in the true environment of nature. This was rather disappointing for a game that was true to the theme, to have nothing of the sounds of what you would actually be hunting in!

Why you might not like this game:
It can be a little too challenging at times and sometimes it can be completely unfair to you once you start playing. While the game itself has a simple premise, you really have to get into the game in order to keep yourself busy and interested. There is nothing like shooting at deer though, and gamers of all skill levels should be able to learn how to use the shotgun rather effectively without spending too much money in the process!

The Verdict
A clean version of Deer Hunting USA, Big Buck Hunter is a game that you might want to try if you’re looking for something a little different. Although some of the physics are off and you may find yourself looking at a continue screen more often than not, Big Buck Hunter has enough challenge to keep even the most savvy hunters on their toes and loyal gamers at the front of the machine pumping in quarters!
8/10
