Brave FireFighters: Real Life Heroes

1999 SEGA - SEGA - Arcade

Reality games are coming along at a steady pace with a wide variety that include fighter piloting, police simulations and now taking the role of a fire fighter! Armed with a fire hose, a sense of duty and apparently cahoonies of solid rock, you bust through several different stages of fire fighting action, trying to save the innocent, and put out the seemingly living fire. The game features something new and does fall loosely into the light gun shooting genre, but instead of a pistol or machine gun, you're handed a fire hose and thousands of pounds of water to quench the raging fires of every stage.

-Game Play 8/10-

Something new to the genre, you've got a fire hose, and you have to know how to use it! Through several different stages, you have to sweep the burning rooms and save the innocent people trapped while keeping an eye on your water pressure. The fires range from easy to insanely difficult to defeat, and it takes plenty of practice to know just how to put out the bigger fires. Water pressure is important, so the longer you have your hose on full blast, the quicker your water pressure is going to run out resulting in nothing more than a trickle of water to fight the fires with. The game is on a timed basis, so saving people is crucial as is putting out the 'boss' fires that appear during the course of the mission!

-Control 8/10-

It's only as good as your arcade maintenance is. The light gun portion of the game is easy enough to learn, you push he small button to shoot water, or hold it down for a steady stream. You'll have to practice with the fires themselves, as the fires burn out of control and you constantly have to work your way from bottom to top to keep them out!

-Audio 8/10-

The music of the game is rather upbeat, but the real star of the audio is the sound effects! You'll hear the raging fire, orders barked out at you by team members, and even the small cries for help as people are slowly roasting to death inside of burning rooms. Crashing windows, shattering doors and falling floors all greet your ears with astonding realism that isn't matched by anything outside of actually being there, or watching the movie Backdraft on DVD!

-Visuals 8/10-

Clean and crisp, this is more or less like looking at The House of The Dead, but with fire instead of zombies! You'll find several fires raging out of control, people waving for help, and windows shatter outwards from the heat of the fire in the room. The water sprays look detailed, as does the clouds of steam that rise when you've just doused a fire and it's getting ready to spark up again. You have to pay attention to the steam, it'll tell you when the blaze is going to come back to life.

-Quarter Crunching 8/10-

It'll suck up some quarters, and you'll find several places where the time will run out. You'll see that different portions of thew game require precision, or you'll end up spending a buck a pop cause of having to continue so damned much!

-Overall 8/10-

Brave Fire Fighters is a hell of a game with plenty to do. Even though it's basically a shooter in which you fight fire instead of terrorists or monsters, it's still worth a couple of bucks to play. You'll get drawn in with the action, and the challenge lay within being able to successfully putting out the fire, and rescuing the innocents through precision aiming and timing.
