1991 - Takeru - NES
- I don't know where I got this ROM, when I got it, or why I got it, but I'm glad I did. It's uhh . . . neat. Another cool Japanese game that was never released elsewhere, and I doubt this company ever made anymore games, but Cocoron RULZ.
Let's get the stupid stuff out of the way first . . .
-
GRAPHICS
Average NES-style graphics, I guess. Nothing spectacular, and nothing terrible. I'm sure they spent more time on the enemies than on the backgrounds . . . Wait, nevermind, most of the backgrounds are just a solid color, so they didn't spend ANY time on them.
The playable characters can look cool, one of mine did . . .
There can be a lot of slowdown, too. Especially when you have your weapon fully upgraded and you keep hitting the fire button.
Very cartoony, too.
-
SOUND
Guess what, when I played this game there weren't any speakers hooked up, so I can't even tell you if this game has music or not. I'll give it a 20/10 anyway, even though I don't use a rating scale . . .
-
CONTROL
I had no problems with control. It shot when I wanted it to, jumped when I wanted it to, and so on. No complaints here, and that's a good thing.
-
CHALLENGE
Well, I haven't beaten it yet. I think I've got one more level, but it's pretty hard, especially without checkpoints . . . I managed to get to that level, though, so it's not too hard.
It can be almost impossible, I'm sure, if you make stupid useless characters.
-
REPLAY
I haven't beaten it yet, but it's short and fun and customizable so you can test out new things all day. That's cool.

STORY
Standard save-the-princess plot . . .
Tapir welcomes you to the Dream World or something, I'm too lazy to watch the intro again. Tapir is this weird animal-thing with an umbrella and a polka-dotten dress on. He tells you to make characters and then he flies away.
So the main goal is to save the princess, I think her name is Rua. You go through the different levels, fight the bosses, and then you'll eventually find Rua . . . and she tells you a SECRET, and then you have to go rescue Cocoron, or something. Oh yeah, you talk to Cocorin (Cocoron's brother) sometimes . . . and Santa, you have to rescue him in one level.
It's a platformer, don't expect a story . . .

GAMEPLAY
This is what makes the game cool. You start out with Tapir talking to you. Then you're taken to a screen with a list of different head-types, all with different weights and HP levels. After you choose a head you get to choose a body. Again, different weights and HP levels, but some bodies serve special purposes (Jet or Wing bodies will let you hover for a while, I think Tank bodies keep you from sliding down slopes, etc). Then you choose a weapon (Most are useless and weak . . . Pencil?), name your character, and you're good to go.
You choose which levels to play, there's only about 6. A forest, some kind of space mountain thing, a lake made out of milk and cheese, a castle, and uhh, I think the other one is supposed to be an ice level. There's also a house, which is only so you can change your character.
Yeah, after each boss you get to make a new player. Which is cool. You'll probably only use one of them, though . . . I did, and his name was GRAG. I used DUUV sometimes, because he had a Jet body. Shh.
So it's a platformer, but it's much cooler than that . . . Maybe not but what other platformers let you completely customize your characters, and give them 4-letter names?! What other game, damn you!
Another cool thing is when you go from level to level, the level you go through is different. Level! Let me try to explain . . . Going from the house to the forest will start you at the front of the regular forest, and you go throuh until you fight the boss. After that you're on the map again, if you go back to the house you will go through the same forest level you just did, only backwards. But, if you decide to go to the castle instead, you'll go through a different part of the forest and eventually end up at the castle, which you go through until you beat the castle boss. I like that. Between the Milk level and the forest there is a cave that you can't access any other way. I'm glad I found out about that cave early, because otherwise I would have never known where to go after beating all of the bosses.
The fact that you get--I think it's 6 characters is really cool. And then you choose which to use. Some jump high, some can hover, some have lots of HP, etc.
Hopefully I'll get past the last level soon enough.

OVERALL
Another of those games that should have been brought to the US (But not Europe, because Europeans are fat. Especially in Sweden.). I know I say that about a lot of Japanese games, but not all of them . . . I wouldn't care for Farting Dinosaur Adventures aka Asmik Kun Land.
Cocoron, worth a download for sure. You could probably beat it in a day, I almost did and I'm terrible at games.
