In a long standing tradition of action and adventure games, Dark Angel blends a style of adventure and role playing elements into a game that sets you in the dark age of a far away land. Taking the role of Anna, you fight the forces of a dark spirit through the land of Gothos.
-
-Visuals 8/10-
Well detailed and very Diablo-esque, Dark Angel puts you in the middle of a very large and very grim world in which you fight creatures of all shapes and sizes through several different environments. Your field of vision is restricted to a center beam of light that shines down on your character, not allowing you to see just what is coming at you or from what direction.
Weapons and armor are well designed, with each a special attack that is particular to the weapon in question. The overall view is 3/4 overhead, with the in-game screen free and clear of obstructions save for the life and spirit bar in the lower right hand corner of the screen. All in all, the game looks great visually, but room for improvement could have come with FMV's, and possibly a little more close up detailing of creatures and characters.
-
-Audio 5/10-
With no clear voice overs, and level music that comes out sporadic and chopped up. I'm not sure if this is a game glitch or not, but it can be tough on the ears to have the music come raging through the speakers, only to have it cut out thirty seconds later. What can be heard, is a blend of heavy metal guitar and a strange hybrid of orchestra and rock music.
-
-Control 8/10-
The control is dead on target, with a full 360 degree movement, weapon and item hot keys and a fairly easy to use item screen. Moving Anna through the stages is easy enough to do using with either the analog or the control pad, and attacking targets is also easy enough to take control of. A free-moving environment is good in a game like this, because you can run in, hit a few enemies, and then back out to regroup.
-
-Gameplay 8/10-
Adventurous and expansive, there are several areas to fight and explore through while building up your character through experience points and weapons. Quests abound, you can pick and choose just what to do and when to do it, allowing you to gain extra attribute points through completing the goals. Each attribute is gear towards a certain aspect of the game. Where research is needed, in the dungeons, the higher your attribute total, the better your chance of finding items and other valuables.
The main part of the game is undertaking quests and searching the dungeons that litter the land of Gothos. Through this, the game progresses on a timer that gives you one year to complete your quests, build your character and then go after the main bad guy of the game. In doing this, you'll find that the quests range from rescuing villagers, battling hordes of monsters or even finding rare items to restore balance to a town.
-
-Overall 8/10-
Dark Angel has endless possibilities in the adventure department. Finding weapons and magic is the easy part, building your character is a little more difficult. Be aware that the game could take literally hundreds of hours to complete if you're willing to try and find everything that there is to find. Dark Angel is a game that is more or less a purchase than it is a rental. You can't possibly find and complete all of the quest that this game has to offer. Either way, it's worth a look if you're into adventure, and definitely worth a buy if you're a Diablo fan.
