- Double Dragon (Neo-Geo)
-
1995 Technos Japan - SNK - Arcade
- Double Dragon has always been a fan favorite, and a personal favorite of mine since way back in the days of side scrolling action, I've always held the title and its license in high regard. Until now! Based on the Double Dragon movie, this version of Double Dragon tries to step into the main stream of fighting games, and ends up with a patented knee bash to the face and then thrown into a wall with no mercy! Giving you control of ten playable characters, you have to make your way through several grueling stages that don't glorify the movie, or the legendary status of Double Dragon, but rather smash it into the ground. Uninspired moves that have been done before in other fighting games like Street Fighter and Art of Fighting, and characters that don't live up to the design and detail that was ever present in those said fighting games, you're left with a true disappointment that put the nail in the coffin!
-
-Game Play 4/10-
One on one fighting using one of ten playable characters in a best two out of three match up to the brutal finish. Well, that is what it intended to be and turned out wrong! The in game fights are unbalanced, either giving you a clear win, or a total ass kicking, depending on the mood of the computer I suppose. All of the fighting moves are your standard Street Fighter control style, with little left to the imagination, and pretty much useless to use! You'll find Billy and Jimmy Lee, as well as Marion, Abobo and a stick wielding chick named Rebecca to be your best bets while everyone else is a generic fighter with moves that you've seen way too many times before.
-
-Control 4/10-
Sluggish and slow, the control here takes plenty of time to learn and use, and without enough time or practice, you'll be a sitting duck. As said before, all of the special attacks require a Street Fighter style input with a button press to accompany it, and with some of the characters, you don't know what attack button does what! It's hard to discern who does what attacks, and that also takes plenty of time to learn and practice.
-
-Visuals 4/10-
The characters look some what digitized, and really have no flair to them or their special moves! The real star of the game has to do with the backgrounds in which all of them are somewhat interactive. You can break machines, throw your opponent through boxes and the like, so that adds a little bit to the visual and just a little bit to the game play because it's only worth looking at and doesn't do any real damage!
-
-Audio 4/10-
The music leaves plenty to be desired with a musical score that I can't quite put into words, but it doesn't match the game, nor the action going on in battle! You'll find that the sound effects are pretty run of the mill with your generic grunts, groans and screams as well as thuds ringing out a little too loudly. It's enough to give you a headache after a few minutes, so be prepared to pop some asprin!
-
-Quarter Crunching: Varies-
If you're into Street Fighter clones, then you'll like this game. If you're really into it, you'll find that the difficulty curve can be a little on the steep side, and once you get to the two bosses, it can be down near impossible unless you have a good understanding of your character!
-
-Overall 4/10-
This was a poorly made game that trashed a complete good license by trying to make a game out of a crappy movie! You're left with replicated special moves, poorly designed and detailed characters, and music that doesn't match the battles in any sense of the word! Add this onto the fact that the difficulty of the game becomes so damned much that you can't even continue on, you'll see that the only thing Double Dragon has done, is put another nail in the coffin!
