Guerrilla War

1987 SNK - SNK - Arcade

SNK is pretty well known for their classic fighting games but they also have a part in some of the more interesting and trend setting games from the eighties that puts you in control of a soldier at war. Of them all, the most difficult game to find would have to be Guerrilla War, but the action and game play that you find is well worth looking for the cabinet! Featuring exceptional difficulty, easy to learn and use control as well as some pretty intense fire fights and item collection, there is very little here that could possibly go wrong other than the fact that you’ll be dumping quarters into the machine left and right.

The Game Play

The game play doesn’t really change from war game to war game in the SNK war series. In this outing, you’re in an overhead battle that takes you through several stages of blowing things up and avoiding enemy gunfire in the process. You’ll find several weapons that will guide you through your trek, all of which have a different attribute similar to the Heavy Barrel series and you’ll find that the amount of damage that you cause is significant! Through all of the stages, you’ll be forced to deal with overwhelming odds and in some cases, increased difficulty that doesn’t stop until either you or your enemy targets are dead.

Playing through the game with a friend is probably the best bet that you have, simply because you don’t have to play alone through the seemingly endless stages! Overall, the game play isn’t anything that you probably haven’t played before, and the basis of the game is just to kill or be killed and keep pressing forward. Just remember that moving is key and standing in spot makes you an easy target for any incoming enemy fire that may be coming your way.

The control is similar to all of the other overhead war games that you may have played in the past. With one button to fire the weapon and another to throw grenades, you’ll find that the game control is easy enough to learn in just a few short minutes! Expert gamers and novices alike will find that the game control has nothing more than timing and swift movements to contend with. Even though the game can be slightly stiff when going through, it’ll be easy enough to dodge incoming fire if you just keep moving enough that the enemy can’t get a bead on you. Other than that, there really isn’t much else to the game control that you’ll have to learn and with the simplicity of the control, it makes it a pick up and go type of game that anyone can play!

The Visuals

The visuals are an overhead style game with plenty of action and explosions onscreen. Just like Heavy Barrel and Ikari Warriors, you’ll run through several stages of action and mayhem in trying to reach your goal. The explosions look all right and the detailing the stages is also pretty good, but you’ll also find that the game is lacking the sharp detail and detailed coloring that most war games do from this time era. The mood of the game is meant to be war like and with that idea in mind, the game was created to look like war is Hell, and in all honesty, it does!

The Audio

The music of the game is adventurous and pace setting as music in games such as this should be. The stage music does tend to blend together, but the beat of the game really does keep the mood and keep the pace through all of the stages! The sound effects also come across without becoming too hard on the ears, blending altogether for a rather enjoyable listening experience. This isn’t to say that the music makes the game, because it doesn’t, but rather creates and keeps the mood that the game is meant to be in, which is action filled!

Why you might not like this game:

The game is extremely difficult, even for an overhead action game. With a constant inflow of enemies, it’s exceptionally easy to find yourself on the short end of the stick and getting blasted by whatever happens to get in your way. The amount of enemies that fills the screen as well as the different shots that are coming at you can be hard to deal with and it may end up with you having to reorient yourself with the game screen and try to see where you are before you get blasted!

The Verdict

Guerrilla War is a hell of a game from the SNK war series that does well in terms of difficulty and simple game play. With the amount of games out on the market that have you blasting everything in sight, you have to play this game with the intentions of seeing what it was back over a decade ago. Top this off with the fact that this machine is hard to come by, it’s worth a look to see where some of the great hits like Ikari Warriors and Heavy Barrel came from with a few hard earned and easy spent quarters!

8/10
