Lethal Enforcers II: Gunfighters

1994 Konami - Konami - Arcade

Lethal Enforcers brought us the world of drug running, bank robberies and all out street war with digitized enemies on digitized backgrounds. With Lethal Enforcers II, you have the same thing all over again, only this time, you’ve been sent back in time to the Wild West in an attempt to stop some robbers from doing the same thing again! Even though the location has changed, the game play is still the same and you’ll find that it can be extremely easy if you memorize the locations of the enemies the first time through.

The Game Play

Your duty is to knock off as many of them before they take you out. You have several different locations to choose from that range from the realistic to the ridiculous. With that in mind, the play turns to shooting the gun-toting criminals, and there is nothing more satisfying than popping a cap in some perps’ ass! Innocents can get in the way, and you're based on a rating system. Unlike Wyatt Earp, the more damage you do to the bystanders, the worse off your rating is going to be. If you want to be a patrolman, then keep wasting the poor lady who is just getting out of the way, or shoot a fellow cop...it's all in good fun, right?

The control is limited to a revolver looking pistol that comes in designer colors of blue or pink. Ridiculously large and heavy, after a few minutes of play, you may find yourself leaning on the cabinet because your arm is sore. While it was innovative, it can turn out to be a pain in the ass if you've been playing for an extended period of time! Reloading your gun is easy enough, just aim the barrel down away from the screen and pull the trigger. As with all FPS games in the arcade, your accuracy is limited to the calibration of the gun. If it's off, then go slap the arcade attendant and tell him to correct it.

The Visuals

Giving you a first person view of the action on screen, you're forced to make split second decisions based on what appears in different areas of the screen. Although variety between the enemies really isn't much to speak of, the best part of it all, is to watch an innocent bystander go flying when you put a bullet into them by accident! Now, with this version, you’ll be in the Wild West and in some cow town or another trying to blast whatever pops up at you from time to time. Although this isn’t all that bad, it lacks the Mad Dog Macree feel and still has a little bit of that digitized action going for it.

The Audio

Somewhat tinny to the ear, Lethal Enforcers doesn't offer the best of FPS soundtracks. Even for a game of it's age, the musical accompaniment sounds more or less like a crummy downloaded MIDI that's being played way to low to make any sense out of. Sound effects range from the obvious {bullets ricocheting, and explosions} to the surprising yet somewhat comforting death cry of a shot enemy. Much like the original, you’ll have to listen to the poorly done audio throughout the game regardless of what you’re doing and what location you’re in, so be prepared for it!

The Verdict

LE II is a game that you have to play with the intentions of playing an expansion pack of sorts on the original. With the dated visuals and the low-key locations that are featured here, the switch from inner city to the Wild West just doesn’t seem to make a good leap. Much like the first-person shooting games that you’ve played hundreds of times, once you have the locations of the enemies and the special weapons memorized, this is nothing but a simple walk through the park. Worth a buck at the most, Lethal Enforcers II is only for those who want to play a simple shooting game with simple presentation!

6/10
