- Legend of Kage
-
1985 Taito - Taito - Arcade
- Legend of Kage, in so few words, is a weird ass game with little or nothing going for it. More than likely created to give people something to do, arcade machines like this were pretty much left alone, only to end up shorting out anyway. My hang out had this golden oldie, and I decided I'd spend a quarter and try it out. Let me tell you, it was the longest damned hour of my life! You're out to rescue your chick from a bunch of bonehead ninjas who think it's funny to steal other guys women. So, our hero Kage takes off through the forest, and starts hacking away at ninjas while jumping hundreds of feet through the air and into trees, trying to avoid the endless army of ninjas who are out to stop him! While it was fun for the first twenty minutes or so, I started to notice that the level started looking the same, there wasn't a boss to be found, and the tree jumping was making me a queasy.

-Game Play 4/10-
Anyone with half a braincell can see that this game really has one goal: Kill them before they kill you. You start out on the ground, with ninjas jumping out of trees and throwing starts at you. Alright, now that may sound pretty cool, but you have to remember, this is pre-rendering days, so everything is either palette swapped, or it all looks the same! The trees look the same, the ninjas look the same, and at one point, you may think that the only thing moving is the background, cause you're sure not getting anywhere. There are no bosses, and there is no story line advancement, you're just a lone ninja hunter hacking away at the seemingly endless supply of enemies that will eventually overtake you!
-
-Control 4/10-
While not bad, it's simple but you can't control your jumps. Once you're in the air, you've left the launch pad, and until you come down, all that you can do is hack and slash and hope you don't get nailed on the way down! You have an attack button and a jump button and timing is pretty much everything, so if you're going to play, learn to use the controls, it'll save you some quarters!
-
-Visuals 4/10-
Simple trees, simple ninjas and a really fuzzy looking Kage leaping through said trees avoiding said ninjas with the greatest of ease! There really isn't much to the visuals of the game, other than when you get killed, you tend to keel over and die, only to reappear with ninjas flying in at you at an exponential rate! Don't expect any special effects, cause you won't find any, and don't expect any intro movies or even the hint of detail in the characters, because you won't get those either. What you see {which isn't much} is what you get!
-
-Audio 4/10-
I'd rather listen to nails on a chalkboard than listen to the consistent looping of each and every stage music that appears here. Sound effects are pretty much nil as well, other than the sound of the swish when you leap through the air.
-
-Quarter Crunching 1/10-
If you can't play for more than an hour on this game, it might cost you quarter or less to play again! The game that I played took me an hour before I finally said to hell with it and let the ninjas kill me! Save your quarters for something more constructive, like eating paste...you'll have more fun with it.
-
-Overall 4/10-
A simple hack and slash with a leaping Kage and endless ninjas. It's not the greatest game, and I don't think I've come across a bad Arcade game yet, until I came to this one! If you're looking for some good action in a classic fashion, go find a Ghosts n Goblins machine, or a Frogger machine even and leave this one to gather dust. You'll be glad you did!
