Storyline
Power Blade takes place in 2191. The earth has developed to
something that reminds very much of
the paradise thanks to a the Master Computer (They really
put a lot of thought behind that name).
It solves all of the problems and everybody are happy. But
then one day the Maincomputer
gets disconnected by terrorists from another planet (Don't
ask me why) and it's up to the player
to stop the terrorists and start the computer again. This
mission is to be completed
in the body of the man who is in charge of the security of the
computer, NOVA. The reason
why he is the person to do it is because he is the only one
who can control the legandary
Power Blade. The Master Computer has six smaller
computer units located at six sectors.
First NOVA has to go to these six sectors, then find the
contact man that has hidden somewhere
in each sector and receive an ID card from him, and then get
into the security room,
defeat the guard(s), and get the secret tape. With all of the
six tapes NOVA will be able
to get inside the seventh sector, where the Master
Computer is. Then he have to
locate it before he can encounter the hardest guard of them
all and then start the Master Computer.
- Gameplay
The controls are a little more advanced than in the regular
NES game. You can use the A-button
to jump, the B-button to use your weapon, and the direction
pad to move NOVA, nothing
creepy about that. The complicated part is the start and
select button. With the start button
you go to the pause screen, as in most games. In the pause
screen you get to choose between
a grenade and a little can filled with something. You might
not have no idea why you're
able to make this decision, but you will find out when you
press the select-button (while playing).
If you chose the grenade icon you will throw a grenade by
pressing select, and it will
instantly kill all enemies on the screen (and injure bosses).
If you chose the can-thingie
you will get full health by pressing the select button. Yep
yep, that used to confuse me
when I first played this game, since I never read the
instruction booklets. It might've seemed
as if I've been complaining, but I haven't. The controls are
actually very good, as they are in most
of the old games since they couldn't sell by having cool 3D
graphics only. Well, they didn't
have 3D graphics at all... At some points you might think
that NOVA is a slow runner,
but that's mainly 'cause the animation makes it look as if
he's running faster than he actually
is capable of.
- Graphics
The graphics are very nice in this game. There aren't alot of
menus in the game, only one I think.
So I can't really complain about that, 'cause the main screen
is cool and the menus are in white
against a black background.
As I said, the graphics are very nice in this game. Everything
is welldrawn, both foregrounds
as well as backgrounds, and most of the things are well
animated. A little minus is that
NOVA seems to be running way faster than he actually is,
and that objects sometimes disappear
for about half a second or something. It doesn't destroy the
game itself, it's just annoying.
- Sound
The music in this game is really cool and fits well to the
action/platformer stages. The
explotions in the intro makes you smile due to the simplistic
sounds. I can't remember which one at the moment,
but I love one of the sector's theme music. It's very, very
cool, and so are the boss themes.
- Replayability
You don't think you'll beat this game the first time you try,
so it will probably take a while.
At least it did for me, but I was very young when I got this
game. The replayability is high
as long as you don't get so good that you complete it within
an hour or two. I personally don't
think you will 'cause the levels are all very big and complex.
But what do I know? *Remebers that
lying (probably) punk who sat that F-Zero X record* I would
like to kick his ass!
- Originality
The storyline is original I guess, and so are the weapons and
armours. The overall game is
very much as an ordinary 2D action-game though. But I
should also say that it's an incredibly
good action-game. Some of the bosses are also very
original, the Sector 3 boss for an example.
Sure, it's one of the easiest bosses in the game, but it's
original.
- Overall
A great action game in well drawn 2D graphics. The music is
also cool, and the great controls
accompanied by the level-structures makes this a great
game.
