Storyline
Wario, Mario's evil twin brother, has taken over Mario's precious castle (Yes . . . Apparently Mario's got his own castle now) and is probably planning on taking over the world or something. I'm not really sure . . . I'm at my girlfriend's house now and my instruction booklet is at home so I can't check it up. Ah well . . . Mario now has to get his castle back from Wario but Wario has sealed the gate to the castle. To open the seal Mario has to find six gooooolden coins. Each coin is guarded by a boss-dude. That's pretty much the storyline of this game . . . Get the six coins to open the gate and get the castle back from Wario. So surprisingly enough you DON'T have to save Princess Peach, she's not even mentioned. Yay! So the storyline is a bit different from "normal" Mario-games, but it still feels Mariolisticly.
- Gameplay
As in all the Mario games I've played the control is close to perfect. Walk with Mario using the D-Pad, jump with A, and hold B to increase Mario's speed (and jump higher and further). The level structure is also very great. There are about 30 different levels in the game and they are all very different from eachother. The structure and the enemies are really great and you will have great fun playing this game.
In this game the coins has more meaning than just to give you extra lives. There's a cave where you can go to bet coins on games (a spinning wheel kind of thing) to gain extra lives or items. The more money you bet the better prizes you can win. One thing that might surprise you are the heeeaaarts. Extra lives aren't represented by green mushrooms in this game, no no. I guess that'd been confusing thanks to the lack of colours, so Nintendo chose to use hearts instead.
In the storyline-section I mentioned the six different coins that are guarded by six different bosses. Each boss is located at the end of a zone. There are six different zones and a couple of non-zone related courses. The zones brings great diversity to the game. One is located in a big tree, one in a house, one in outer space, one under water, and so on (I won't mention all them 'cause it might ruin some of the fun). To move between the zones you walk on paths out in the world map. Some zones are harder to reach than others, 'cause you have to go through certain levels just to reach them.
- Graphics
The enemies in this game are very well animated and different from the enemies in the other Super Mario-games. But old classics such as Goombas and Koopa Troopas are still here, of course. The design of the world map and the levels are also very well done. One thing I don't like about the graphics is the frame rate. When there are three enemies with a wide movement-capacity (or whatever) the speed tends to slow down. This doesn't happen very often, though . . . So it doesn't really ruin the game. Yay!

Sound
Yay! The music in this game is very catchy and very well composed. The same goes for the sound effects. The music really brings excitement to the game (especially the boss-songs). This opinion isn't shared by everyone though . . . Malin, my girlfriend, is sitting next to me now. She finds the music annoying. Haha. I like it, though. Yay! *Starts and ends the section with "Yay!"*
- Replayability
Some of the courses are extremely fun and can be played just about infinite times. The game is very fun but a bit shorter than most of the newer Mario-games (longer than the first ones, though), so it's a good thing that the replayability is as great as it is. I've at least played through the game three times and started numerous new files that I never finished. Heh . . .
- Originality
When this game was released it was very original and didn't follow the exact same path as the rest of the Super Mario-games, so the originality of this game is surprisingly good. But I don't mean that the other Super Mario-games have bad originality, though . . . Just that this one is a biiiit different.
- Overall
A great platformer that every Mario-fan should own. Yay!
