- Super Street Fighter II Turbo Revival
-
2001 Capcom - Capcom - GBA
- Street Fighter 2 is one of the best fighting games ever. When Capcom released Super Street Fighter 2: Turbo Revival for the Game Boy Advance, I was hectic to get myself a GBA and play the game. However, it was just a week ago when I was able to get a GBA (finally) and my first game was this. There were a few reasons for it: I love Street Fighter, Castlevania: Circle of the Moon was sold out, and Alpha will not come out in a month. So, I decied that this shall be my first game. Since it being my first GBA experience, I was amazed in what it could do. It was like playing a SNES version of the game on the go. I was dumb-founded by how something so small could hold so much power. Everything as perfect; color, graphics, the same Street Fighter gameplay, the fun of playing the game for the very first time. I found this game would be one of my most loved games in my handheld library, all the way up there with Tetris DX and Link's Awakening. I would agree with anyone who is deciding on a game right now, the price is only 20 bucks, and if you are looking for something to keep your index fingers blistered for a couple of months, this is the game to get.
This game takes the same story as all the other previous Street Fighters: You pick a fighter to play as in a Martial Arts Tourmement and who ever wins is proclaimed the Worlds Strongest Fighter. Until another one is held. There 16 characters to choose from (at the beginning, you could get more character when you reach a certain amount of points) and each one has their own set of moves. They range from electricity to super kicks to the Dragon Uppercut. You have 12 matches out of the 16 fighters each time in Arcade mode (the main mode) and always the final 4 shall be Balrog, Vega, Sagat, and M. Bison (in that order.) When you beat the Arcade Mode, you get a small still animation with words telling the story. However, most of them are corny and they do not make any sense with any story of the game (unless Guile could be make sense with the horrid Street Fighter Movie...ew.) I cannot fin anything wrong with this came, except the glitch with 9999 VS points.

Graphics: 10
These are the best graphics I have seen on the GBA thus far. There are large amount of color in everything that is on screen. I could not have imagined a handheld with that much color but the GBA amazes me again in what it can do. Each character has animations of when getting hit, different attacks, when you win or lose something, like a match or a mini-game. All of the backgrounds have some form of show in them, from Chun Li's biking stage to E. Honda with his bathhouse. I did not find any problems without a backlight, though I do not know why people complain about that. You just need a light source, that's all. However, someone sitting right next to you would not be able to see these wonderful graphics is all. It is just a shame. However you can see them easy, so it’s ok.

Gameplay: 10
Fighting games always have gameplay, no matter how recycled it may be. You could see that Street Fighter has always had the gameplay to be a winner, and it flaunts it proudly. You could see it in SSF2:TR. You have a large amount of characters for you to choose from, with many modes to use them. Arcade: The standard mode that is the real part of the game. You could have just this with VS and sold a fairly decent amount of units. Then you have training, where you fight a dummy opponent of your choice to try out all of your new moves. Then you have VS mode, where you need 2 of these games, 2 GBAs, and the link cable. Then you fight a real live opponent, something that is a refreshing feeling one getting the pattern of the arcade opponents memorized. The next mode is Survival, where you face amounts of people, or play the arcade mini-games again for a time. Survival mode is my favorite besides Arcade because of the way the mode is made. Unlike other survival modes like Tekken, you begin with full life while your opponent can easily be taken out by a single hit. However, with the more people that you beat, you get some life regained, but the computer gets more. So, if you are doing 100 person survival, at the end you will have 1% life while your opponent shall have full life. Tough huh? The last mode is Time Attack. This could be called a 2nd survival mode really. You can see that your fight a certain amount of people just like survival, and the life is set up the same way too, except your fight different people, like one of most popular characters, Akuma. You can also fight Ryu and Ken “and someone else” except that those have full life and are much better than the people that you normally face, and if you are able to beat them (just takes some good timing) when you play any other mode, they will seem much easier because of the powerful of them. With this many modes, you will be able to play this game for a long time.

Sound: 10
If you seen some of my other reviews with handhelds have seen that I do not like handheld sound, (which I don’t) so when I plopped in this, I was blown away by it. I would actually turn up the sound instead of leaving it mute. Each character has their own music, which shows how much memory that the GBA cartridges can handle. When you see that you also have music for about every single screen in the game, and that is a good amount of music. All of the music from the 2nd one is still here; in it’s decade old glory. However, with so music sound coming out of the GBA’s speaker, it sounds distorted. When you do a special move, you hear the people say it, like HADOKEN! or SONIC BOOM! and such. They also have groans of dying. Which is a nice touch. So, the sound is some of the best sound out of a handheld to date.

Fun Factor: 10
As I said before, I have little blisters on my hands from playing this game. It hurts to type. I just can’t put down this game. If you want a fast paced game this would keep your busy for a couple of weeks or months, just plop down the 20 dollars and get it. Just a reminder: the buttons that would give you blisters if you play too much are the shoulder buttons.

Buy or Rent?
I suggest to you that you buy this game, unless if you want to wait a month for Alpha. However, Alpha would be t least 10 bucks more money that this is now. And it can only get lower.
