This game was the flight sim. genre. This game was the pinnacle of polygonal graphics. This game was a huge hit. Now, that of course, was in 1993, it couldn’t still be all those things, right? WRONG! This game still is a huge hit. Whenever I think polygons, I think Star Fox. Remember when you saw Star wars, you thought, my god this is an advancement! Then when you saw Star Fox, you thought the same thing? You probably thought you were crazy to compare Star Fox’s advances to Star Wars’, well, don’t worry, there were 1 million gamers who thought the same thing. Here’s why:

- Gameplay
This game pioneered the flight simulation genre, and it set a standard for all games to follow. You are placed in the plane of the leader of a group of space pilots, Fox. From there you fly through the level along with your specially selected team of flyers. Speaking of them, these are them. First, Rabbit, he is seemingly the intelligent planner of the group. Next is the Frog, he is pretty much just there, what I didn’t like is that he always needs help, so I guess he is the worst in the group. There are also two others, but frankly, I forget them.
You can choose from one of two different views. You can be inside the plane, which is the view of choice for many, but not me. You can be in a close up view of the ship, which is my preferred view because you can see your plane, and where it is going, but because it is close to the screen, you can tell where everything is. Or, finally, you can be in a far away view, seeing all the terrain around you. Whichever view you pick is up to you.
Once you start you are launched out of the hangar and you propel forward, taking out all the enemies you see along the way. You will encounter many different types of enemies, from ground tanks, and other ground artillery like lasers, to giant ships, and other flying things. Each providing different levels of difficulty. Usually the ground ones are the hardest though, because they use projectiles, and are hard to hit from below you.
Then, at the end of the level, you are faced against a giant boss, who can sometimes even launch regular enemies at you. Then sometimes you get to special levels, in which while you are battling normally you have to fly through rings and such. Your first thought when playing this one may be boredom, but no worries, the first levels are designed to give you a handle on how to play the game. Once you get further into the game it will become worthy of the reputation it has.
- Graphics
Polygons, Polygons, Polygons… That’s all I can say about this one. These days when we see polygons in a game we think: ''aw damn, I like realistic graphics in a game.'' But back then, polygons were realism, those two words went together, and Star Fox was the first game to truly use those polygons. Quite an accomplishment for it’s time, using the newly developed ‘Super FX Chip’ in the game.
Now, I’m sure there is one person out there who is thinking, ''What is he talking about? Polygons?.'' Well, First off, you need to get with the times if you want to call yourself a gamer. Second, polygons are graphics made up of 3D geometric shapes to create the effect of realism. For example, a duck would have a cube torso, a triangular prism beak, and two rectangular prisms for legs, and if you don’t know what that is, go back to math class, I’m not explaining it. Now, of course, that was just a crude example, this game uses the Geometric shapes, and takes them to the next level. This level, made an amazing game.
- Sound
The sound is fairly good in this game, but not great. Of course, that’s looking at the sound in the eyes of a 2000 gamer. When I put myself in the shoes of a younger, 5 years younger me, the sound looks a lot better. Now, of course, when doing the sound, I’m not going to put a single bit of emphasis on comparing them to today’s sound qualities, simply because, back the they weren’t possible.
So, looking at this as a person from the SNES times, the music is great. They use a sort of techno. music. What this means is they don’t use as many of the traditional instruments like trumpets and pianos. Instead they use computer generated music. Some of you may be a little upset right now, but honestly, it’s quite a good thing. The music was really good.
In the area of sound effects there wasn’t a whole lot to offer. Like the music, and like most sound effects usually are, this is computer generated as well. The main sound effects you get are the shooting effects. Depending on who, where, and what is shooting, you will get different sounds. But usually they are the standard ‘zaps’ and ‘bangs.’
- Enjoyability
WWWWWWHHIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!! Blast off into some gaming fun Fox! I loved this game. I have owned it for about 6 of the 7 years it has been out, and it is now one of the sole reasons I keep my Super Nintendo hooked up. All parts of the game pull together to make this one extremely enjoyable, and the polygons, which I’ve mentioned many times before, made the game so much more enjoyable.
- {~~Other Important Scores~~}
Replay Value: Medium
The Replay value in this one is pretty good. Mostly because there is no ‘jump out at you’ storyline, so you will be able to replay it without boredom with stories you’ve already gone through. The other things that make this one good to play again are many. First the good gameplay. This game is just fun to play. The other major thing is the graphics. They are leaps ahead of the other games out at the time, and make a great supporter for the gameplay, and whole game in general.
- Control: Very Good
The control in this game is your average flight sim. controls. Your plane doesn’t quite move too much, the background moves, your plane moves up and down and side to side, a little bit. But for the most part the background is what moves around, and because of this, you don’t have to struggle to make a sharp turn, I liked that. your plane is always moving forward, and you can accelerate faster, whenever you want to. All in all the control is pretty good
- Challenge: Moderately Hard
This one is so many miles ahead of the sequel in terms of difficulty. This one is much harder, because it has more levels, different paths to take to the end, and more enemies to face along the way. Also, in this one, as with many original games, they tried to make it more elaborate. They wanted to make it good, then in the sequel they had already established themselves and slowed down. So in this one, there is a lot more to do, many more enemies, and overall harder difficulty.
- Learning Curve: Varies
This game can take different amounts of time to learn. Due to the fact that some people may already have a knowledge of the flight sim. genre, or good hand eye co-ordination to judge when and how fast to make your turns.
- Buy or Rent: Buy
Nothing really to say here, once you play it once, you will decide yourself, I’m sure you’ll make the right choice. Of course the right choice is a buy. The reasons for this are the ones already mentioned many times before. Those are pretty much every section above this one. Read them , get your explanation, buy, enjoy.
