Tetris

1989 Nintendo - Nintendo - GB

Tetris is the universal puzzle game. It brought the puzzle gaming genre, and perhaps even the whole video gaming industry, into the limelight. It is good, and it is good on any system. When I say any system, I pretty much say that with truth to it as well. The game Tetris, and the spin-offs of it have been on almost every system in existence. From the NES, to the SNES, to the PSX, to the GameBoy, to the N64, Tetris can be found everywhere, and everywhere you look it is good. It is hard to jus make this game bad, the idea is amazing. Well, I think it’s time for me to stop my jibber-jabberin’ (as Mr. T says) and get on with the Tetris review!

BREAKDOWN

Gameplay: 10
Graphics: 1
Sound: 2
Enjoyability: 10

Gameplay

The gameplay is what makes Tetris what it is. It is the fun, the addictiveness, and the premise all in one. If you didn’t have the gameplay the way it is, this game wouldn’t be as good as it is. Also, on that note, if the gameplay wasn’t this way, or close to this way on all of the other spin-offs, they wouldn’t be as good as they are.

The basic premise is very simple really. You are set in front of a box of sorts, and from the top of that box, little blocks fall down. The blocks are shaped in many different ways. To explain them, I should first tell you they aren’t really blocks, instead they are composites of little blocks. Now, these little composites of blocks can be in the different shapes. Some look like T’s, some look like L’s, some are just straight lines. There are so many different shapes I can’t really explain them all.

Now, what do you do with those shapes you ask? Well, as they fall, you rotate them, and place them on the bottom of the box. To rotate them, you just press a button. You press it as they are slowly falling, until it is in the position you want, or it reaches the bottom on its own. What you need to do with these falling blocks is get them formed into each-other properly. The basic task is to get all of the blocks stacked properly, until it reaches the top of the box. But, when it reaches the top, it has to all reach the top. What I mean by that is you can’t just stack tons of blocks in one row and leave the rest empty, otherwise you lose. It’s a very hard task. I suppose with that in mind, a perfect round would be getting the whole box filled with no gaps.

Once you finish one round, you move on to the next. To finish the rounds you need to accomplish a certain goal that it will give you. Now, once you move on to the next level, the game gets much harder. The way it does that is that the blocks start falling a lot faster. With them falling a lot faster it becomes harder to rotate them the way you want them, and accordingly, the game itself becomes harder. The one downside of this game is that there is no save or password features. Basically, when you shut the system off, you start over.

Overall, the gameplay is great. Despite the fact that there is no saving or passwords, it still comes out on top. I had no problems with having to start over when I shut it off. The simple reason for that is that it is just really fun to play. Overall, a great job on the gameplay.

Graphics

The graphics aren’t very good at all. Despite the fact that the gameplay is so great, the graphics just fall a little short. No wait, what am I saying? The graphics fall a lot short. The basic graphical idea for any Tetris game is bad, but then this game being on the GameBoy didn’t make things much better. You are basically placed inside of a 2 dimensional flat square. From the top little blocks that are also two dimensional fall. Two dimensional, two dimensional, two dimensional. Nothing at all good in this area. I just can’t think of much to say, and even if I could think of something, it would be a bad thing.

Sound

This is another area where everything fell short. It is slightly better than the graphics, but just slightly. I suppose it’s not hard to be better than the graphics though, considering what they got. You basic music is just that, basic. It is a systematic series of beeps and such, forming a song. Not my favorite type of music, but you can’t expect orchestral from a GameBoy. The basic sound effects are just as bad. They are basically the ‘bloop’ when you rotate a block and the small ‘bang’ when you let the blocks land. Pretty bad in the sound area, but not the worst area.

Enjoyability

The enjoyability of this game is very high. It is just very very fun to play. This is all from the gameplay. The other, less fun, areas such as the sound aren’t a big factor for this game. When playing this you are more concerned with the gameplay, and in this, the gameplay is great. Accordingly the enjoyability is too. Perhaps the greatest area of this is the addictiveness. Once you start playing, you wont want to stop. Must… play… more!!!

Replay Value: Infinite

The replay value is virtually infinite. You can play this game over, and over, and over, without ever getting bored. There is just no end the addiction, and the need to play. I pretty much only keep my GameBoy and NES out to play games like Tetris. Once you pop, you just can’t stop.

Challenge: Hard

This game is really quite hard. At first, it will seem hard because you aren’t very good, then the levels will seem easy. But then, just as you think you have become a Tetris master, the levels get 10 times harder and you’re back at square one. It’s really quite annoying occasionally, but the steadily rising challenge is one of the things that will keep you playing.

Buy or Rent: Buy

I strongly suggest you buy this. There is just no end to the fun you can have with this game. Not to mention, that it is old enough now that when you find it, it is worth about the price of your fingernail. So grab the nail-clippers, run to the local game store, and enjoy!
