1994 Namco - Namco - Arcade

Tekken is another fighting game that brought a new idea to the table and sold it to fighting game fans everywhere. Turning well away from the days of 2 dimensional fighting, Tekken offered gamers a new view in the world of 3D with detailed characters, wide-open spaces and chaining combinations that the like of, had never been seen before.

With a handful of fighters to choose from, you are drawn into the world of the Iron Fist Tournament to compete for whatever your heart desires as the prize. While this may seem rather lacking in the story department, the game takes over in terms of technical tactics, giving you a ton of moves for just one character.

-Visuals 8/10-

Detailed characters and wide open spaces offer up an eye-popping visual game. With well designed moves, extensive and detailed combinations, you'll find that Tekken started the 3 dimensional rave, and built on it from there. You have a variety of characters that use different styles of fighting and become apparent when using characters such as King who uses wrestling moves, or Law who uses the traditional style of Kung Fu.

-Audio 8/10-

A heavy-rock/techno beat that will accompany you through each stage comes out without a hitch. While not the most impressive music, it does add to the mood of the game, in which you kick their ass, or they'll kick yours. Sound effects range from growing growls when you're powering up for a heavy damaging attack, to the grunts, groans or cries as your character or opponent is defeated.

-Control 8/10-

Everything in Tekken is based on button and controller movement. Practice here is vital, and the learning curve can be as steep or as easy as you'd like it to be. With certain moves, you may be forced to hold the control stick at a certain direction and then quickly push it forward to make a throw or special move come off. Blocking is easily done with a backward motion, and jumping really isn't needed here. The most commonly used moves in the game are usually listened on the front of the screen, so you're not going in totally blind. Extensive combinations need days of practice just to the timing off right. All in all, the control is definitely worth learning and getting used to unless you like getting stomped.

-Game Play 8/10-

The focus of the game is simple: Stomp them before they stomp you. Wit the amount of characters that you have at the start, you'll have plenty of time to learn the control and the moves for each character. Practice is the secondary focus here, in which each character could literally take weeks to master or even use effectively against other computer controlled, or human controlled characters.

While each character has it's strength's, they also have their weaknesses that you'll have to learn and use effectively to make it to the end and face off against the head honcho. The amount of fighting that you'll do, as well as blocking, throwing and attacking is immense. This is where most of your game play time and money will go.

As for secrets, other hidden characters can be unlocked through fighting and completing the game, as well as time-release characters that are set by the internal clock of the game. Replay here is immeasurable, and hours can and probably have been wasted here just learning the intricate control and move listings.

-Overall 8/10-

Tekken brought to life a solid fighting game that offered intricate combinations, moves, throws and strategies. Even though Tekken is behind the times, it was the stepping stone to the Tekken games and 3D fighters that we have on the market today. With creative characters, well designed and thought out moves, and expansive possibilities, Tekken is one of the best known, and most played fighting games.
