X-Men: The Arcade Game

1992 Konami - Konami - Arcade

X-Men is somewhat of an old Konami arcade game. It's still a lot of fun, though, if you like sidescrolling beat-'em-ups that are in the same vain as Final Fight or Streets of Rage. You get to pick from 6 X-Men (Cyclops, Colossus, Wolverine, Storm, Night Crawler and . . . Dazzler . . . ) to fight as through levels until you get to the boss, which is a super villain from the Marvel univers, like Juggernaut or the Blob.

Graphics: 8

At the time, these were really good. The frame rate is nice, there are big explosions, lots of color and the characters are done well. For the most part. The Blob is supposed to be 8 feet tall, yet he's only a little taller than the 6'4" Colossus (Who also looks a little skinny). I'm nitpicking, though. Anyway, though the graphics look pretty cool, they can get pretty pixelated. The explosions are pixelated and the characters are somewhat pixelated. All in all, it was a nice looking game.

Sound: 10

The sound in this game rocks . . . I like the music in it. It's fast paced and does well to set the feeling for the level. The first stage song is especially cool . . . "Here come the heroes . . . to save the world from destruction . . . they are X-MEN!!". It's cheesy-cool. Other than that, the explosions, hit effects, etc. sound nice, as do the lines that the villains have before the fight.

Control: 10

It's just a simple 3 button setup. One button is attack, one is jump, and the other is your mutant power button. You can move in 8 directions as with any other game like it.

Gameplay: 10

This game is a damn good beat-'em-up, along the lines of The Simpsons arcade game. It's a simple game, but great fun when you just feel like giving it a whirl. It feels like the comic book with all the bright color, story and lines that the villains throw out, making it that much cooler. I'm a big fan of Marvel, so that's a nice plus for me. It's fun hitting the bosses out of their lines when they burst on screen. Good stuff. It's pretty basic beat-'em-up stuff, with the special moves and such. Your mutant power is like your desperation move that you can pull out on bosses or when enemies are plentiful on screen. An example being Colossus', where he forms a huge ball of energy around himself, hurting every enemy in range. All in all, it's a well done game and one I still like to play.
